Getting Back to Your RV and a NYS Camping Season

March 15, 2016

rv insuranceThe sun last weekend got us in the mood to think summer, the outdoors, and family fun around the campfire. So we Googled around a bit and stumbled onto a great website at NYCampgrounds.com.

The great thing about this site is that it’s all about camping destinations in our own New York. It’s divided up into the regions of the state. So we checked out Central New York and the Adirondacks.

Here’s what we found…

Campgrounds in Central New York
Twenty-two sites listed here from Belvedere Lake Campground & Cottages in Cherry Valley to Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Cooperstown. As most of us here in New Hartford and the Utica area know, the ride through Cherry Valley on Rt. 20 is gorgeous! And we didn’t realize Yogi and Boo Boo were so close!

Some of the other campgrounds are in Hubbardsville, Bouckville (where you can check out the antique stores, too), and Bridgewater.

And we noticed our friends at the Herkimer Diamond Mines and KOA Resort. Here you can prospect for the world famous Herkimer diamonds, beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals that are close to 500 million years old. And the campgrounds border the gorgeous West Canada Creek. There’s trout fishing, tubing, and swimming right there on the property.

Campgrounds in the Adirondacks
We love the Adirondacks and you’ll find info on thirty-five campgrounds there. Many are at Lake George but you’ll find sites from Chestertown to Corinth and from West Chazy to the North Pole. As far as we’re concerned, anywhere “Up North” is a great time, but it turns out you can even see Santa in July!

Campgrounds in Oneida County
As we’re looking around for campground ideas, we decided to check our own Oneida County Tourism website and we found some great ideas right here close to home. There’s a list here of ten campgrounds on Oneida and Delta Lakes, the West Canada Creek, and Black River. Beautiful sites in Cleveland, Westernville, Rome, and Forestport.

Our journey on the Oneida County Tourism site led us to another local source for Adirondack trail and tourism info. It’s called the ADK Trail Map and you can get to it here. It’s a website by Mohawk Valley GIS and contains valuable maps, guides, and information an almost everything available in the Adirondacks.

So after you arrive at your campground, you might want to do some hiking. Just enter your location, the number of miles you want to hike, and how difficult the hike you want and the site comes up with a suggestion. Plus, you get a detailed map of your destination. Very cool! There’s more here on lodging, dining, trailheads, and activities. It’s a really great way to plan your vacation or just a weekend this summer in and around the Adirondacks.

We realize it’s a bit early to be talking about RV’s and campgrounds, but it’s so much fun planning, why not start now?
