5 Wildfire Tips for New York Homeowners

October 7, 2025

wildfire safety New York state While wildfires are often associated with the western United States, New York State is no stranger to wildfire danger. In fact, effective October 2, Governor Hochel implemented a statewide burn ban because of the dry conditions we’ve experienced over the last few weeks.

Prolonged dry spells, strong winds, and even careless outdoor burning can ignite blazes that threaten homes and communities—the fire danger in Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer Counties is considered high right now.

Preparing now can help protect your property, your family, and your peace of mind.

Create a Defensible Space Around Your Home
A defensible space is a safety buffer that slows the spread of fire and gives firefighters a better chance to defend your home.

*Clear debris and leaves from gutters, roofs, and around foundations.

*Trim trees and shrubs, keeping branches at least 10 feet from your home and from each other.

*Keep grass short and hydrated, especially during drought conditions.

*Store firewood, propane tanks, and lawn equipment at least 30 feet away from structures.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recommends maintaining a 30- to 100-foot defensible perimeter, depending on your terrain and vegetation.

Prepare an Emergency “Go Bag”
If evacuation becomes necessary, you’ll need essential items ready to grab and go.

Include:

*Copies of IDs, insurance policies, and important documents (store digitally as well).

*Basic first aid kit, medications, and face masks.

*Bottled water and non-perishable food for at least three days.

*Flashlight, extra batteries, and phone chargers.

*A change of clothes, cash, and contact numbers.

Store your go bag where it’s easy to access, and make sure every family member knows where it is.

Plan Multiple Escape Routes
Wildfires can spread quickly, blocking roads and cutting off power. Identify two or more evacuation routes from your neighborhood and discuss them with your family. Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full and park facing the road for a quick departure.

If officials issue an evacuation order, leave immediately—waiting too long can trap you in hazardous conditions.

Strengthen Your Home’s Fire Resistance
A few upgrades can dramatically improve your home’s ability to withstand embers and heat:

*Use Class-A fire-rated roofing materials like asphalt shingles, metal, or tile.

*Install mesh screens (1/8 inch or finer) on vents and openings to block embers.

*Replace wooden decks and fences with fire-resistant materials when possible.

*Seal gaps around windows and doors to prevent ember intrusion.

Review Your Homeowners Insurance Coverage
Wildfire damage is typically covered under a standard homeowners policy, but coverage limits, exclusions, and deductibles can vary. Check with your insurance agent to ensure:

*You have adequate dwelling and contents limits to rebuild.

*Additional living expenses coverage is included if you’re displaced.

*Valuable items like jewelry or collectibles are properly scheduled.

Even in New York, wildfire season is becoming longer and more unpredictable. With preparation, awareness, and proper insurance coverage, you can greatly reduce your risk and protect what matters most.
