Safe Thanksgiving Cooking…and Conversation Starters

November 21, 2023

Thanksgiving cooking safety Research at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) finds that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. And you won’t be surprised that all the excitement and conversation with the kids, aunts, uncles, and friends, leads to unattended cooking as the chief cause.

So to avoid that call to your local fire department on Thanksgiving, we offer you these tips to avoid a kitchen disaster this Thursday. We’re grateful to the NFPA for this list of valuable and practical ideas to help keep it safe.

  • As we mentioned above, unattended cooking is the main cause of kitchen fires on Thanksgiving. Our tip is to stay in the kitchen so you’re always keeping an eye on the food.
  • Along the same lines, stay at home when cooking your turkey. Have someone else make that last minute trip to the grocery store.
  • Keep children away from the stove, knives, matches, and loose electrical cords attached to appliances.
  • Keep the kitchen floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks, or bags.
  • Test all your smoke alarms to be sure they’re working.

Thanksgiving Dinner Conversation Starters that Everyone Will Enjoy

A generation ago, talk at Thanksgiving dinner could include opinions on the politics of the day. That’s not so easy in 2023. So, now that the above tips have been taken to heart and everyone has joined together at the table without incident, we offer these SAFE…and fun…conversation starters.

  • If Thanksgiving were a sport, what would some of the event categories be?
  • If you could create a Thanksgiving-themed dance move, what would it be called, and can you demonstrate?
  • If you were a mashed potato sculpture artist, what famous landmark would you recreate?
  • If Thanksgiving were a fashion show, what would be the must-have accessory for the runway?
  • If Thanksgiving were a talent show, what would be your unique talent to showcase?
  • What if instead of stuffing, we filled the turkey with something completely unexpected? Any suggestions?
  • If Thanksgiving were a theme park, what attractions would it have?
  • If you could have a Thanksgiving dinner with any fictional characters, who would be at your table, and what would they bring?
  • Here’s one of local interest: What if instead of turkey, the traditional Thanksgiving meal was a giant pizza? Discuss.

We would love to hear what your table decides are the benefits of Utica area pizza instead of turkey. Actually, our local pizza chefs probably would too!!

While suggesting you save the pizza for the weekend, all of us at Scalzo, Zogby & Wittig wish you and your family a wonderful and delicious Thanksgiving!

Until next time,
