Long Summer Road Trips: Safety for Senior Drivers
June 9, 2026
Summer is the perfect time for a road trip, especially after the long winter we just had in the Utica area. Whether you’re visiting family, exploring scenic destinations, or simply enjoying the freedom of the open road, a long drive can be one of the season’s great pleasures.
For senior drivers, however, extended time behind the wheel presents unique challenges that require a little extra preparation. By taking a few precautions before and during your trip, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
Start with a Vehicle Checkup
Before heading out, make sure your vehicle is ready for the miles ahead. Have a trusted mechanic inspect your tires, brakes, battery, fluids, windshield wipers, and air conditioning system. Summer heat can be especially hard on vehicles, and a breakdown on a busy highway or in a remote area can quickly turn a vacation into a stressful experience.
Also, check that your spare tire is properly inflated and that you have a roadside emergency kit that includes water, flashlights, jumper cables, and a first-aid kit.
Plan Your Route in Advance
Long drives are less stressful when you know where you’re going. Review your route before leaving and identify rest stops, fuel stations, and overnight accommodations if necessary. GPS technology is helpful, but it is wise to carry a paper map or printed directions as a backup.
Try to avoid driving through unfamiliar urban areas during rush hour, and consider planning your travel around times when traffic is lighter.
Take Frequent Breaks
Fatigue is a major risk on long trips. Even experienced drivers can become tired after several hours on the road. Plan to stop every two hours or every 100 miles to stretch, walk around, and refresh yourself.
Regular breaks help improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and maintain alertness. If you feel drowsy, don’t try to push through it. Find a safe place to stop and rest.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Smart
Summer temperatures can lead to dehydration, which may cause fatigue, headaches, or reduced concentration. Bring plenty of water and drink regularly throughout the trip.
Choose light, healthy meals and snacks rather than heavy foods that can make you feel sluggish. Fresh fruit, nuts, and protein-rich snacks can help maintain energy levels without causing discomfort.
Manage Medications Carefully
If you take prescription medications, bring enough for the entire trip plus a few extra days in case your return is delayed. Keep medications in their original containers and store them where they will not be exposed to excessive heat.
Some medications can cause drowsiness or increase sensitivity to sunlight. Review possible side effects with your physician or pharmacist before traveling.
Limit Night Driving
Vision changes can make driving after dark more challenging as we age. Glare from headlights, reduced depth perception, and difficulty seeing road signs can increase risk.
Whenever possible, schedule your travel during daylight hours. If an overnight stop allows you to avoid driving at night, it is often a worthwhile investment in safety and comfort.
