Kids and Homeowners, Enjoy a Safe and Fun Halloween!
October 29, 2024
Halloween is a night filled with excitement, costumes, and candy, but safety and courtesy should be top priorities for both trick-or-treaters and homeowners. Whether you’re out collecting candy or welcoming visitors to your door, these tips will help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and spooky night.
For trick-or-treaters, we recommend traveling in groups. Going door-to-door is always more fun—and safer—with friends or family. Stick with a group and have a designated adult accompany younger children.
Since it’s one of those rare times kids get to travel the streets at night, be sure to choose bright and comfortable costumes. We agree that while creative costumes are exciting, it’s essential to stay visible. Incorporate reflective tape or glow sticks into your costume, and make sure it’s comfortable and won’t cause tripping hazards.
Be aware of cars, as drivers have limited visibility with all the activity. Stick to sidewalks whenever possible, and cross streets only at crosswalks or well-lit intersections.
Not everyone is able to handle the mass of ghosts, goblins, and princesses arriving at their door on Halloween night. We suggest that kids and the parents with them respect signs that indicate the homeowners aren’t participating in trick-or-treating. Only visit houses with porch lights on.
Don’t trample landscaping or litter candy wrappers, and say “thank you” after receiving treats!
And the best part…sorting out the candy after a prosperous halloween night! But, avoid eating treats until you’ve returned home and inspected everything. Discard any unwrapped, homemade, or suspicious items unless you personally know the giver.
As for homeowners, a well-lit porch not only signals that you’re handing out candy but also helps prevent trips and falls. Make sure your walkways are clear of obstacles, and consider adding festive lights for a spooky yet safe ambiance.
Keep in mind that not every child can enjoy traditional candies. Consider offering small toys, stickers, or allergy-friendly snacks. Display a teal pumpkin if you participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project, which signals non-food treats are available.
Just walking past a home can trigger the dog barking inside. And halloween can be extra stressful for pets with all the doorbell rings and visitors. Keep pets in a secure area away from the door to prevent escapes or accidental bites.
As your insurance agents, we must point out that while spooky decorations add to the atmosphere, avoid using real flames in pumpkins or decorations that can block walkways. Use LED lights to reduce fire hazards and avoid anything that might cause someone to trip.
Trick-or-treating usually occurs during specific hours, typically from early evening until 8 or 9 p.m. Turn off your porch light when you’re done to signal the end of candy distribution politely.
Halloween is a beloved tradition in the Mohawk Valley, and a few precautions can ensure everyone enjoys it safely. Trick-or-treaters should prioritize visibility and respect for neighbors, while homeowners can help by creating a welcoming and hazard-free environment.
With these simple steps, you’ll have a night full of fun, frights, and sweet treats!
