Inground Swimming Pool Safety for Adults: Stay Safe, Enjoy the Water
July 29, 2025
While many pool safety conversations focus on children, adults are not immune to accidents in or around inground swimming pools. Slips, falls, drownings, electrical hazards, and alcohol-related incidents are all risks that can affect adult swimmers.
Whether you’re hosting a pool party or enjoying a quiet evening swim, keep in mind that even adults need to follow some essential safety tips.
First, according to the CDC, up to 70% of deaths associated with water recreation (boating or swimming) involve alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination—all critical for safe swimming. Save the drinks for after you’re done swimming, not during.
Swimming alone is also a recipe for disaster. Always use the buddy system. Even strong swimmers can have medical emergencies like cramps, heart issues, or sudden fatigue. Having someone nearby can be the difference between life and death.
If you swim at night, make sure the pool and surrounding area are well-lit. Modern pools usually include underwater lights, motion sensors, and deck lighting. Make sure all of this is working to prevent trips, falls, and missteps into the deep end.
Walk poolside carefully. Wet surfaces around pools are extremely slippery so use non-slip pool decking. And always enter the pool slowly—diving should be reserved for designated deep areas only, and never dive headfirst into shallow water.
Especially for senior swimmers, don’t overexert yourself, especially in deep water or during strenuous activities like laps or underwater swimming. Rest frequently and stay hydrated.
Make sure your pool is equipped with compliant anti-entrapment drain covers. Keep hair, swimsuits, and limbs away from pool drains and suction fittings. Powerful suction can trap even adults underwater.
Keep electrical appliances and devices, like speakers or chargers, far from the water. Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) on all outlets near the pool to reduce the risk of electrical shock.
Consistently check water quality. Adults are just as susceptible to waterborne illnesses as children. Regularly test and maintain proper chlorine and pH levels to prevent infections and skin or eye irritation.
If you’re a frequent swimmer and/or especially a pool owner, know how to perform CPR! Immediate action can save a life while waiting for emergency responders.
Finally, keep in mind that adults often feel confident around water, but confidence should never replace caution. By respecting the risks and following safety guidelines, you can enjoy your inground pool responsibly and reduce the chance of serious injury or tragedy.
