Backyard Fireworks Safety on the Fourth of July
June 25, 2024
Here in the greater Utica area we eagerly anticipate the dazzling displays of fireworks that light up the night sky, symbolizing the nation’s independence and spirit.
However, while fireworks bring joy and excitement, they also come with significant risks. Each year, thousands of people, particularly children and teenagers, are injured in fireworks-related incidents.
Understanding the Risks of Fireworks
Fireworks, while beautiful, are essentially explosive devices. Mishandling them can lead to severe injuries, including burns, lacerations, and eye damage.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an estimated 9,700 people were treated in emergency departments for fireworks-related injuries in 2023 alone. About 42% of these injuries were burns, with hands and fingers being the most affected body parts.
It is also important to note that even sparklers, often considered safe for children, can burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a serious risk of injury.
To ensure a safe and joyous celebration, it is crucial to follow essential fireworks safety guidelines. And to protect yourself from lawsuits if your sued because of an injury occurring at your home.
Key Firework Safety Tips
Purchase Legal Fireworks
Ensure that you only buy fireworks from licensed and reputable vendors. Illegal fireworks are more likely to be dangerous and cause injuries. Check your local laws to understand which fireworks are permitted in your area.
Supervision is Critical
Teenagers ages 15-19 had the highest rate of emergency department treated fireworks injuries. Children ages 5-9 had the second highest rate (See CPSC above). Always supervise children around fireworks. Never allow young children to handle fireworks, and ensure that older children use them only under close adult supervision.
Use Fireworks Outdoors and in Clear Areas
Fireworks should be used in a clear, open area away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and other flammable materials. Maintain a safe distance from spectators, and ensure that the ground is level to prevent fireworks from tipping over.
Follow Instructions Carefully
Read and follow all safety instructions on the fireworks packaging. Never try to modify or combine fireworks, and avoid using homemade fireworks.
Keep Water Handy
Always have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of a fire. Used fireworks should be soaked in water before being discarded to prevent accidental fires.
Never Relight a Dud
If a firework fails to ignite, do not attempt to relight it. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposing of it.
Protect Your Eyes and Ears
Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from sparks and debris. Ear protection is also advisable, especially for young children, as fireworks can be loud and damaging to hearing.
Be Mindful of Pets
Fireworks can be terrifying for pets. Keep them indoors in a safe, quiet area away from the noise. Ensure they have identification tags in case they run away due to the noise.
Celebrate Sober
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Ensure that the person lighting fireworks is sober and responsible.
Consider Professional Shows
Attending a professional fireworks display is the safest way to enjoy fireworks. There are plenty of Utica area municipalities offering shows conducted by trained professionals who adhere to strict safety regulations.
Fireworks are a cherished part of 4th of July celebrations, bringing communities together in awe and wonder. However, to ensure that the festivities are memorable for the right reasons, let’s be safe out there.
So let’s celebrate our nation’s freedom with responsibility and care, making it a joyous occasion for everyone.
Happy Fourth of July Mohawk Valley!!
