April – Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April 10, 2013
You know, everyone blames cell phones for being the biggest cause of distracted driving, and rightly so. But think about it….EVERYONE drives distracted, and not always because they’re talking on the phone.
With today’s economy, so many people are worrying about how they will pay their bills; where will their next meal come from? That alone makes people drive without really paying attention. With today’s lifestyles and nose-to-the-grindstone, always busy, gotta-be-somewhere schedule, your mind is on the next thing you have to do, rather than on the road.
Being a parent, the one thing that goes through my mind is instead of the cell phone as a distraction, what about those kids in the back seat, arguing about who gets to sit where, or who gets to choose what DVD to watch. You are so busy looking in the rear-view mirror to see who to yell at, you’re not looking in front of you to make sure you’re even in the right lane.
Oh, and what about the passenger who is constantly changing the radio station to music you would NEVER listen to, or the music your teenager insists on playing?
April has been designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month by the National Safety Council. Check out what The Hartford put together to promote driver safety.
Let’s make our roads safer for everyone. Keep your eyes on the road, and BOTH hands on the steering wheel.
