Do’s and Don’ts For Fireworks Safety

June 27, 2023

fireworks safety tipsA sure sign of the Fourth of July holiday is the “Fireworks for Sale” tent at your local shopping center parking lot. This is a relatively new phenomena here in Central New York, as it wasn’t long ago that laws loosened a bit regarding fireworks.

For example, sparkling devices that are now legal in New York State include handheld or ground-based devices that produce a shower of sparks, colored flames, or smoke.

These devices do not explode, do not fly into the air, and do not make any loud noises. Examples of legal sparkling devices include sparklers, party poppers, snappers, and other similar items.

However, even though some sparkling devices are allowed, local laws and ordinances may further restrict or prohibit their use. It is essential to check with your local government or fire department to determine the specific rules and regulations regarding fireworks in your area.

Having said this, the laws in New York State regarding fireworks are quite strict. The possession, use, and sale of most types of consumer fireworks are generally prohibited for individuals who do not possess a valid permit.

Fireworks that are illegal in New York State include firecrackers, sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, and any other fireworks that explode, shoot into the air, or are designed for professional displays.

Safety Tips When Attending Fireworks Displays

Fireworks can be enjoyable to watch, but it’s crucial to prioritize safety when handling or attending fireworks displays. Here are some general fireworks safety tips:

Follow Local Laws and Regulations
Familiarize yourself with the specific laws and regulations regarding fireworks in your area. Respect and adhere to these guidelines to ensure a safe and legal experience.

Leave Fireworks to Professionals
Whenever possible, attend public fireworks displays conducted by trained and licensed professionals. They have the expertise and experience to handle fireworks safely.

Keep a Safe Distance
If you’re attending a fireworks display, follow the designated viewing areas and maintain a safe distance from the launch site. Respect any safety barriers or guidelines provided by event organizers.

Never Make Homemade Fireworks
It is extremely dangerous and illegal to create your own fireworks. This includes modifying or altering existing fireworks. Leave the manufacturing and handling of fireworks to professionals.

Supervise Children
If using legal sparkling devices, always closely supervise children and ensure they are using them in a safe manner. Keep children away from fireworks that are not intended for their use.

Use Fireworks in Open, Outdoor Areas
Only use fireworks in clear, open spaces away from buildings, vehicles, dry vegetation, and other flammable materials. Ensure there are no overhead obstructions, such as trees or power lines.

Have Safety Equipment Nearby
Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. It’s also a good idea to have a first aid kit on hand.

Protect Yourself
When handling fireworks, wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and avoid loose-fitting clothing that could potentially catch fire.

Never Relight or Handle Malfunctioning Fireworks
If a firework fails to ignite or goes off incorrectly, do not attempt to relight or handle it. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposing of it properly.

Be Considerate of Others
Inform your neighbors in advance if you plan to use legal fireworks on private property. Be mindful of individuals with sensitivities to loud noises and pets that may be frightened by fireworks.

As an insurance agency who handles homeowners insurance claims every day, we can’t stress enough that safety should always be the top priority. It’s crucial to exercise caution and use fireworks responsibly to avoid accidents and injuries.

So we wish you a wonderful…and accident free…Fourth of July week!
