Do You Know the Answers to These NYS Learners Permit Questions?

nys learners permitYou’ve been driving a long time. It’s second nature. You know what you’re doing and you know the rules of the road.

Or do you?

Try the following questions. They’re taken from the New York State DMV study guide for the Learner’s Permit Test. So get out a piece of paper and pen…who knows, you might pick up a helpful tip.

A. Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign
Match each description below with one of these road signs: Regulation Signs, Warning Signs, Destination Signs, Service Signs.

1. Blue with white letters and symbols.

2. Yellow and diamond shaped with black letters or symbols.

3. White rectangles with black letters or symbols, but some are different shapes, and some can use red letters or symbols.

4. Green signs with white letters and symbols.

B. Pavement Markings

5. Instead of a double solid line that means no passing or a dotted line that means passing is permitted, what does one solid line in the middle of the road mean? (This is a tough one!)

6. What does a diamond symbol in a lane mean?

C. Who’s Boss?

7. What takes precedence over signs, signals, or pavement markings?

8. If you reach an intersection with four way stop signs at the same time as a driver on your right, and both of you prepare to go straight, who has the right of way?

D. Alcohol

9. Your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) depends on the type of beverage you drink: True or False.

10. A BAC of more than .05 percent is legal evidence that you are impaired: True or False.

11. Chemical test evidence is required to prove you were intoxicated or impaired: True or False

Some of these are tough, especially the sign questions. You know them when you see them, but visualizing them when you’re not on the road isn’t easy. And we weren’t sure about the single line, either!

So, how did you do? See the answers below. Could you pass your leaner permit test?

Who’s Boss
7. Directions given by traffic officers take precedence over signs, signals, or pavement markings.
8. Yield to the driver on the right

Alcohol

10. True. And, a BAC of .08 percent or higher is evidence of intoxication.
11. False. The testimony of a police officer about the way you drive, your appearance, and behavior when arrested can provide enough evidence to convict you, even without a chemical test.
