Your College Student and their Cars

Is your child embarking on their first year of college?  Are they living on campus?  More importantly, are they taking their car with them?  What do YOU think about that?  What does your insurance company think?

From what I’ve read and heard, 1st year college students generally do not have a car with them on campus; a lot of colleges don’t allow that.  But once they hit their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year (or beyond), you know they’re going to want that car with them.

So, what about insurance on that car?  Generally, a lot of insurance companies apply a credit if your 1st year student is more than 100 miles away from home without a car.  Talk to your agent, they will be able to answer all your questions, and maybe even reduce your insurance premium.

In addition to a discount for your student away at school, there is also a good student discount.  Insurance companies believe that college students with good grades means good drivers, and offer a discount if they maintain a certain average, usually a 3.0 GPA or higher.   Again, check with your agent, they can help.
